‘MORAYO’ IS A TRIBUTE ALBUM TO MY LATE MUM – WIZKID

Wizkid, the award-winning Nigerian singer, has opened up on the thought process behind ‘Morayo’, his forthcoming album.

Speaking in an interview with Esquire, the ‘Bad To Me’ hitmaker said the album is a tribute to his late mother.

The singer lost Jane Dolapo Balogun, his mother, in August 2023. She was buried in October of the same year.

“It pays the utmost respect to my mother. I’ve named it my mum’s name,” he said.

The singer also talked about his desire to promote the African and Yoruba cultures through his music. The Grammy Award winner said he would like the world to know about his culture.

“It’s very important for people to know where the source of my magic comes from. I’m African, I’m Nigerian; that’s my blood, that’s my DNA,” he said.

“So, it’s important for me to push Yoruba out there. Let people know about my culture. I like to know about everyone else’s culture, their way of life, and this is mine.”

Wizkid, born Ayodeji Balogun, gained prominence in 2011 when he released his debut album ‘Superstar’.

He has released four additional albums including, ‘Ayo (Joy)’ in 2014, ‘Sound From The Other Side’ in 2017, ‘Made In Lagos’ in 2020, and ‘More Love, Less Ego’ in 2022.

The release date for his sixth album’Morayo’ is however yet to be revealed.

The 33-year-old is considered to be among Nigeria’s biggest artistes in contemporary times.
